Colesbury - external galleries

Project: Colesbury - external (KS1742)
Client: Hystar Construction Ltd
Location: Kingswood, Surrey
Materials: Brushed stainless steel 316 grade, toughened and laminated glass, steel channeling

During the installation of internal concrete staircases clad with Walnut, Kevala Stairs was asked to design the outside galleries and Juliette balcony.

Our designers were inspired by the sweeping shape of the wall beneath the first floor balcony, resulting in production of this elegant, flowing first floor glass and stainless steel gallery.

One difficulty which we had to overcome was that an angled coping stone on the edges of the wall was chosen by the architect. We had to design and produce special metal brackets. These had to be tested by a structural engineer proving that the balustrade would withstand lateral forces and comply with Building Regulations and British Standards. Brackets were inserted into the wall cavity allowing us to securely anchor steel newel posts. Coping stone was then drilled and laid (by others). Toughened and laminated glass panels were fitted together with curved stainless steel handrail.

The second floor gallery is straight and mounted into stainless steel faced channel. As there are no newel posts this creates visually attractive continued glass gallery allowing residents to enjoy surrounding gardens without any obstructions to the view. These same principles were applied to the design of a curved Juliette balcony which follows the radius of the external wall and is fitted with six stainless steel brushed fixings.
