The spiral staircase is magnificent. Your measurements were spot on, the manufacturing is faultless and the lads have done a superb job installing it. We are both delighted.

Kevala Stairs Note: This letter together with images of the spiral staircase was received several months after the installation. Mr Tim R. has asked us to share his experience with you.

My name is Tim R. and my wife, Jenny, and I have just completed our first self build. Due to planning constraints we could only build a bungalow, but why waste the roof space, so we built a dormer bungalow. Using the roof space means that some very interesting shapes can be incorporated into the design and we were keen to use these shapes to maximum effect. We also wanted a Wow factor when visitors stepped into the hall. Both of these aspirations could be achieved by having a spiral staircase, going up to a gallery, thereby extending the hall into the roof.

It’s all very well having aspirations but putting them into practice is another thing. We started building without any idea of who could supply the spiral stairs. We must have spent over a year searching and although there are dozens of suppliers and hundreds of designs none matched our vision or budget. As a self builder I am a member of Build Store and it was on a visit to their new Swindon exhibition centre that my wife suddenly announced “there’s our staircase”. Kevala Stairs had a display incorporating several different designs one of which was a spiral. The quality was immediately apparent and looking around the display it was also apparent that the stairs could be tailored to our exact requirements. The only concern was cost.

The next day we arranged to meet Kevala Stairs MD, David, back at Build Store. There Dave explained his design philosophy, the options available and approximate costs. Dave, who is a carpenter by trade and property developer, started producing stairs because, like us, he could not find anyone supplying what he wanted. Every staircase is totally unique and bespoke to the property. Finally, and we found this very agreeable, the price was extremely competitive.

It was several months before we were ready for Dave and his wife Dana to come and measure the stairwell and gallery but once the measurements were taken the final design was produced very quickly. Just to ensure we had covered all options, and before signing off the design, we asked to meet Dave at his new showroom in High Wycombe. There we noticed further options that we liked and had missed before. Incorporating these changes was no trouble and the design was finalised. Just before we left I asked if it was possible to change the top of the stainless steel centre column from a wooden cap to stainless steel. The response I received was “we’ve never been asked for that before. I’ll see what can be done”.

With the use of some very high tech machines the staircase can be manufactured very quickly. The spiral stairs arrive and were delivered by two of Kevala Stairs fitters. The quality of the complete package (specification, design and product) was demonstrated by the speed of installation. Each component fitted exactly and it only took one day for the fitters to install the complete staircase. In my case an extra half day was required to install the gallery balustrade.

Only time tells if we have made the right decision. We have been using the spiral stairs for several months and are absolutely delighted. They look good, feel good and every new visitor has exactly the same reaction. Wow. Oh, by the way, the top of the centre column is stainless steel and it just finishes the structure beautifully.
